Specimen Collection Requirements:

Mix well immediately after collection by inverting tube 8 to 10 times.
Collection can be combined with Reticulocyte Count and Smear for Consult.
If testing will occur more than 24 hours after collection, send 2 unstained dried blood smears with specimen.

Stability and Storage:

Room temperature - 24 hours
Refrigerated within 4 hours of collection - 48 hours
MAP K2 EDTA tubes - 12 hours at room temperature
Micro containers – 4 hours at room temperature

Some sites will not provide RBC indices after 12 hours, Hemoglobin will still be reported.

Processing:

DO NOT centrifuge.
If specimen type is, or suspected to be, cord blood or other, package requisition if available with specimen and notify Hematology.

ER – 90 minutes
In-Patient – 120 minutes
Out-Patient – 240 minutes
Community – 480 minutes
Non-Urgent:
In-Patient – 240 minutes
Out-Patient – 720 minutes
Community – 1440 minutes
