Test Includes: | Medical devices are cultured aerobically and anaerobically Orthopedic hardware, including prosthesis, plates, and screws are incubated for 14 days to rule out Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes). For catheter tips, refer to: Catheter Tip Culture Note: Culture of intrauterine device (IUD) specimens is not routinely performed. If actinomycosis is suspected clinically, consult the Microbiologist On-Call (MOC). | ||

Specimen Collection Requirements: | Aseptically remove the medical device. Avoiding further contamination with any other surfaces/materials, place the extracted device into a sterile container. Submit entire device. The device cannot be processed for culture if it cannot fit into a sterile container with the lid securely closed. Disassemble into smaller parts if possible. Sterile OR bags are not acceptable. Swabs of devices are not acceptable and will not be processed. | ||
Test Resources: | Indicate specific body source, device type, and relevant clinical information (including history, reason for device removal, and duration in situ) on the requisition or in the Clinical History field of the Connect Care order. This information is important to ensure appropriate culture testing. | ||
Stability and Storage: | Room temperature. Do not refrigerate. | ||
Transportation: | Transport to the testing laboratory as soon as possible after collection. | ||
