Specimens must be submitted to the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory immediately.

Call the lab to notify them that the specimen is being sent.

Edmonton Zone:
Samples must be submitted to the Anatomic Pathology frozen section room/OR path lab immediately.

North Zone:
Immediately deliver the specimen to the Anatomic Pathology Lab.

Routine Turn Around Time:

Intra-Operative Consult reports will typically be communicated to the surgeon within 20 minutes from the time the specimen is received.

Calgary Zone:
Intra-Operative Consult reports for Neuropathology will typically be communicated to the surgeon within 30 minutes from the time the specimen is received.

Additional Test Information:

Intra-Operative Consults are performed at Hospital sites only.

After normal hours, the physician should contact the Pathologist on-call at your site.

The immediate delivery of fresh tissues (without saline) to the laboratory is CRITICAL to the results of the testing which will have a direct impact on the subsequent treatment/therapy received by the patient as well as affecting the patient’s prognosis.

Calgary Zone:

For Neuropathology cases, contact the neuropathologist on-call through the Foothills Medical Centre.

For Neuropathology cases at the Alberta Children's Hospital, contact the pathologist on-call at that site.

If an IOC is required outside of normal working hours (Monday to Friday 07:30 - 18:00), the physician must contact the Neuropathologist on-call prior to surgery.

Edmonton Zone: Outside of normal working hours:
Grey Nuns Hospital (GNH), Misericordia (MIS), Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) and Sturgeon Hospital (SGH): contact the Edmonton Zone on call Anatomic Pathology pathologist.
University of Alberta Hospital (UAH): contact Locating for the pathologist on call.

North Zone and South Zone:

If the surgery is cancelled or delayed, notify the Anatomic Pathology department.

Notify Anatomic Pathology department approximately 30 minutes prior to receipt of the tissue.

The appropriate contact phone number for results MUST be provided and requesting physician MUST be available to receive the results.
