Stability and Storage: | Transport specimen to Laboratory immediately | ||||||||||
Processing: | Tissue will be sampled for examination by light microscopy (plastic and paraffin embedding), Immunofluorescence and Electron Microscopy.
Baseline Biopsies: Tissue is sampled for examination by light microscopy (paraffin embedding only) and is handled as a fresh specimen. | ||||||||||
Transportation: | The specimen MUST be transported to the Anatomical Pathology Lab immediately.
Edmonton Zone: During regular laboratory working hours Monday to Friday (excluding holidays): University of Alberta Hospital (UAH): Kidney biopsy sample must be submitted to the Anatomical Pathology lab between 0600 and 1730. Grey Nuns Hospital (GNS), Misericordia (MIS), Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) and Sturgeon General Hospital (SGH): The sample and requisition must be delivered immediately to the Anatomical Pathology lab between 0800 and 1400. Outside of regular laboratory working hours including weekends and holidays: Deliver the sample and requisition to the UAH Laboratory Medicine and Pathology Specimen Control (4B2.10) Include instructions to refrigerate and hold for anatomical pathology technologist on call. UAH: Contact locating and notify the renal pathologist and technologist on call for Anatomical Pathology. GNH, MIS, RAH and SGH: Kidney biopsy collection must be pre-arranged between the attending physician and the UAH renal anatomical pathologist on call. Baseline/Donor: Outside of regular laboratory working hours including weekends and holidays: All sites: Place the sample in 10% buffered formalin in a sterile, screw-capped container. South Zone: CRH: Immediately deliver to the Gross Lab. Must be received prior to 1100 to ensure same day delivery to Calgary Zone. Medicine Hat Regional Hospital (MHRH): Must be received prior to 1000 to ensure same day delivery to Calgary Zone. | ||||||||||

Additional Test Information: | Calgary Zone: Booking Renal Biopsy Procedures: For FMC, PLC, RGH and SHC during normal work hours (08:00 to 16:15 Monday to Friday, excluding stat holidays): The physician MUST book the procedure with Diagnostic Imaging Services - Ultrasound at least 24 hours in advance. Urgent cases will be given priority. For ACH during normal work hours (08:00 to 16:15 Monday to Friday, excluding stat holidays): The Nephrology Clinic will contact the OR Desk to book the biopsy, and then inform the Pathology Lab of the date and time of the booking. For all sites after normal work hours, on weekends, and stat holidays: The physician MUST contact both the radiologist on-call for Ultrasound AND the renal pathologist on-call to schedule date and time of biopsy.
