Copper, Liver Biopsy:
Marked elevations of hepatic copper are characteristic of Wilson's disease and primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC).

Iron, Liver Biopsy:
Diagnosis of hemochromatosis

90 ml sterile screw-capped container with no fixative

Specimen Collection Requirements:

Refer to Toxicology Specimen Collection Requirements, as required:

Collect specimen and place in a dry plastic sterile container with no fixative, however CLRW, saline, formalin or paraffin block may be accepted.
- NOTE: If both tissue copper and/or iron and routine histology are ordered, at least two full cores are needed. Do not divide a single needle core biopsy for tissue copper/iron and routine histology.

Transportation:

Deliver specimens and requisitions to the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory. The Anatomical Pathology Laboratory will forward the sample and requisition for tissue copper and/or iron quantitation.
