Primary Container:

Appropriate sized plastic container with 10% Neutral Buffered Formalin.

South Zone:
Prostate Needle Core Biopsies:
Chinook Regional Hospital (CRH): Appropriate sized plastic container with IBF fixative.

Specimen Collection Requirements:

Ensure there is a 10:1 ratio of Neutral Buffered Formalin to specimen size.
Devitalization and time in fixative of all specimens must be documented on the requisition.

Calgary Zone:
Brain Biopsy: Primary brain tumor must be submitted fresh.

Edmonton Zone:
During normal service hours, follow site specific requirements for submitting fresh specimens to the lab.

North Zone:
For Lung, Chest Wall and Other CT guided needle biopsies, submit in 0.9% sterile saline.

South Zone:
Chinook Regional Hospital (CRH) Emergency Room, CRH and Medicine Hat Regional Hospital (MHRH) Labor and Delivery:

Send specimens fresh.
If applicable, place completed Stillbirth/Placenta label on the Routine Anatomic Pathology Consultation Request (Requisition).

Gastrointestinal and Prostate Needle Core Biopsies:
CRH only: On the container and requisition, please indicate the number of biopsies/prostate cores submitted in each container.

Stability and Storage:

Place in fixative immediately.
Fresh specimens must be submitted to the lab within 30 minutes of devitalization.

All tissues removed at surgery must be sent for histologic examination except those that are on the Alberta Hospital Act exemption list, see "Test Resources".
During normal service hours, please contact the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory with any questions or concerns.
After hours, please contact the Anatomical Pathology pathologist on-call.
