Galactosemia Screen (Synonyms: GALSC, GALBS)

Clinical Indications:

This test is for the initial investigation of galactosemia in a patient.
For confirmation or monitoring galactosemia patient, please refer to ordering alert.

Ordering Alert:

For confirmation of an abonormal screening result for galactosemia in a patient, please order Galactose-1-Phosphate Uridyltransferase.
For monitoring of known galactosemia patients on dietary therapy, please order Galactose-1-Phosphate.

Newborn Screening Blood Spot Requisition (card)

Minimum Collection Volume:

Two full bloodspots

Specimen Collection Requirements:

Ensure that expiry date of newborn screening card (requisition) has not been exceeded before proceeding with collection.

Use a heel poke if patient is less than one year old or a finger poke if older.

Collect two saturated blood spots on the newborn screening card.

Alternative:

Collect blood specimen in a Lithium heparin (no gel) or Sodium heparin (no gel) tube.
As soon as possible or immediately after collection and before sending it to the testing location, use a capillary tube to transfer whole blood to saturate blood spots on the newborn screening card.
Do not allow the capillary tube to contact the card.
Each blood spot should require less than 100uL of blood.

Please ensure all required information, including patient's clinical history/indication, is provided on the requisition.

Stability and Storage:

Room temperature for up to 30 days
Protect from moisture and direct sunlight.

Processing:

Dry the newborn screening card for a minimum of 3 hours with protective card flap folded back.

Write Galactosemia Screen on the newborn screening card in the "DO NOT USE" box.

Transportation:

Transport at room temperature.

Enzymatic test with fluorescence detection
