Clinical Indications: | This test is for the initial investigation of galactosemia in a patient. For confirmation or monitoring galactosemia patient, please refer to ordering alert. | ||
Ordering Alert: | For confirmation of an abonormal screening result for galactosemia in a patient, please order Galactose-1-Phosphate Uridyltransferase.
For monitoring of known galactosemia patients on dietary therapy, please order Galactose-1-Phosphate. | ||

Minimum Collection Volume: | Two full bloodspots | ||
Specimen Collection Requirements: | Ensure that expiry date of newborn screening card (requisition) has not been exceeded before proceeding with collection. Use a heel poke if patient is less than one year old or a finger poke if older. Collect two saturated blood spots on the newborn screening card. Alternative:

Stability and Storage: | Room temperature for up to 30 days Protect from moisture and direct sunlight. | ||
Processing: | Dry the newborn screening card for a minimum of 3 hours with protective card flap folded back.
Write Galactosemia Screen on the newborn screening card in the "DO NOT USE" box. | ||
