Transportation: | It is preferable that a separate sputum specimen be collected for each testing area (e.g. Microbiology and Cytopathology) to ensure each area receives an adequate sample. However, if only 1 sample is received and Microbiology testing is required, the specimen must be sent there first.
Calgary Zone: If tests other than Cytopathology are required on the specimen, a requisition for each department must be completed and accompany the specimen. Edmonton Zone: University of Alberta Hospital only: Deliver to the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory (Specimen Receiving) Walter Mackenzie Centre (WMC) 5B4.29 immediately. After hours and weekends are to be delivered to Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (Specimen Control) WMC 4B2.10. South Zone: Have patient deliver specimen to laboratory on same day of collection.

Additional Test Information: | Submission of a complete sputum series is preferable as it increases diagnostic accuracy. Collect a "deep cough" early morning sputum sample each day for 3 consecutive days. A post-bronchoscopy sputum specimen, collected immediately following the bronchoscopy, is an extremely valuable specimen since cancer cells desquamate following bronchoscopy. Two more early morning specimens should then be collected on the next 2 days thereby completing the post-bronchoscopy series.
