Specimen Collection Requirements: | Using pencil, label one end of slide(s) with patient’s FULL NAME AND Unique Lifetime Identifier (ULI). Wipe the surface of the nipple with gauze pad. Gently massage or compress the areola between the thumb and index finger to express the secretion. Touch the glass slide to the secreted drops. If the discharge is abundant or bloody, smear the secretion by wiping the slide lengthwise across the secretion.
Calgary Zone: Air dried or alcohol fixed (by spray fixation or by immersion in 95% ethyl alcohol) glass slide are acceptable. Alternately, submit specimen in a CytoLyt® container. Central Zone: Red Deer Regional Hospital - Place 1-2 slides in container. Add Cytology (CytoRich Red) fixative to container. Ensure the slide is fully immersed in the fixative. Edmonton Zone: Immerse slides immediately in 95% alcohol or spray with cytospray. Alternately, submit specimen in a vial of PreservCyt fixative. South Zone: Cover the labelled end and immediately spray with cytology fixative. A maximum of 2 slides are required. Air dried slides are also acceptable. Alternately, submit specimen in a CytoLyt® container. Containers must be securely tightened to avoid leakage. Place container or collected slides in a slide carrier and into a sealed biohazard bag. Place requisition in outside pouch.
