Specimen Collection Requirements: | Using pencil, label one end of slide(s) with patient’s FULL NAME AND Unique Lifetime Identifier (ULI).
Scrape the surface of the lesion with a scalpel and gently smear/spread onto two slides. Alternately, direct touch lesion to the glass slide, gently smearing the material to ensure uniform spread on the slide.
Calgary Zone: Immediately spray with cytology fixative. Allow slide to dry. Slides immersed in 95% alcohol are also acceptable. Central Zone: Red Deer Regional Hospital - Place 1-2 slides in container. Add Cytology (CytoRich Red) fixative to container. Ensure the slide is fully immersed in the fixative. Edmonton Zone: Air dry 1 slide and immerse 1 slide immediately in 95% alcohol. South Zone: Cover the labelled end and immediately spray with cytology fixative. A maximum of 2 slides are required. Place collected slides in a slide carrier and into a sealed biohazard bag. Place requisition in outside pouch.
