Clinical Indications: | Neoplastic and non-neoplastic mass lesions: benign neoplasms, inflammatory/infections, abscesses, malignant neoplasms
Collection Alert: | Calgary Zone and Edmonton Zone: If Lymphoma is suspected, an additional specimen collected in TTM (Tissue Transport Media) is required for Flow Cytometry.

Specimen Collection Requirements: | Calgary Zone, Central Zone, South Zone: Expel the contents of the syringe into a CytoLyt® container and rinse the needle in the same container. For optimal sampling, use a 20-22 gauge needle and aspirate the lesion using multiple passes. Edmonton Zone: After each pass, express specimen on slide, gently smear the material to create an air dried and an alcohol fixed slide. Alcohol fixation must happen immediately to prevent air-dry artifact. Submit 2 air dried slides and 2 alcohol fixed slides. For any additional passes, express into formalin in either 10 mL screw top tube or 90 mL sterile container so that a cell block may be prepared. Submit the entire aspiration for optimal cytologic evaluation. If an infection is suspected, material should be sent directly to the microbiology laboratory. If the aspirate yields cyst fluid, the fluid may be expressed into a sterile tube, unfixed for cytospin preparation. It is recommended that a second pass be performed from any remaining solid component to ensure adequate sampling of the lesion. North Zone: GPRH For EUS: Expel the aspirate into 6 mL DxH Diluent and/or sterile saline. Touch preps are made and stained with a quick stain for adequacy reading by pathologist. If a core is present, place in appropriate sized container with 10% Neutral Buffered formalin. Testing is performed at GPRH Anatomic Pathology. GPRH and NLRHC All other FNA specimens are referred to Base Lab. See Fine needle aspirate cytology Containers must be securely tightened to avoid leakage. Place collected specimen in a sealed biohazard bag. Place requisition in outside pouch. For sites referring specimens to Edmonton Base Lab, see Fine needle aspirate cytology in the former DynaLIFE Medical Labs Test Directory or contact Base Lab Specimen Control at 1-800-661-9876.

Stability and Storage: | Refrigerate specimen if a delay in transport is anticipated
Transportation: | Calgary Zone: This procedure may yield an aspirate and a needle biopsy. Place the needle biopsy in a small formalin container. Send both samples to DSC Cytopathology. If only a needle biopsy is collected, send the formalin container to Anatomic Pathology with Anatomical Pathology Requisition (Consultation Request). Central Zone and South Zone: Send out based on routing of specimen in Epic. Edmonton Zone and North Zone Deliver to Anatomic Pathology Laboratory Specimen Receiving immediately. DO NOT send syringes to the laboratory.
