Clinical Indications: | This test is used in diagnosis of conditions related to growth hormone deficiency and excess in conjunction with results from stimulation or suppression testing. | ||||
Ordering Alert: | A random or single fasting GH level is of limited value since secretion of GH is episodic and pulsatile. Testing for GH deficiency or excess is best done as part of a dynamic test involving specific stimuli. IGF-1 is the preferred initial test for investigating GH deficiency or excess. Edmonton Zone: Random GH will ONLY be accepted if the following criteria are met. All other requests will be replaced with IGF-1. 1. Patients with acromegaly being monitored for therapy. This information should be indicated on the requisition or as a Connect Care order comment. 2. Pre-approved endocrinologists. 3. Pediatric patients less than 1 year old. | ||||
