Drug Facilitated Crimes (including drug facilitated sexual assault) and other potential medico-legal situations:

From a toxicological perspective it is not the mandate of clinical laboratories (such as APL) to investigate drug facilitated crimes, nor is it the mandate of clinical laboratories to triage specimens to determine if police investigation is warranted. Clinical laboratories generally do not have the scope, sensitivity nor the forensic processes required for such analyses.
Specimens associated with drug facilitated crimes should not be received at or forwarded to APL laboratories.
For APL staff, refer to individual zone documents to determine appropriate handling if such samples are inadvertently received.

Other Non-Clinical Requests: physicians, do not order this test for the following situations:

Child welfare or custody
Company medicals
Court ordered
Employment related
Insurance related
Parental request
Parole requirement
Patient driven or patient pay requests
Social Services
Volunteer organization requests (eg. Cadets, Scouts)

Calgary:

Higher priority requests are restricted to Acute Care, and require review and approval.
- On regular business days, from 08:00 to 16:00, the ordering physician should consult with the Clinical Biochemist at 403-770-3549.
- Outside of these hours, the ordering physician should consult with the Poison and Drug Information System (PADIS) regarding the request. (PADIS contact number 1-800-332-1414 option 1). PADIS will provide recommendations to the physician for appropriate clinical care. PADIS will notify LIC of the recommendations made to the ordering physician. LIC will notify appropriate front end staff and follow established process to arrange for toxicology staff call back.
Calgary zone APL staff: if the type of drug screen is not indicated on the requisition, refer to PX26-02.170 Drug Screen Collection Flowchart in the Test Resources section.
