Test Name/Synonym:

Urine Opioid Dependency Panel (Synonym: UODP, Urine Drug Testing Panel)

Clinical Indications:

The UODP is intended for patients in opioid agonist therapy programs. For all other requests (including pain management, general addiction, psychiatry, etc.) order the Urine General Toxicology Panel (UGTP)

Test Includes:

Only those drugs or drug metabolites detected are reported. Analysis includes many drugs in various drug classes such as amphetamines, cocaine, benzodiazepines and opioids.

Ordering Alert:

This test can only be ordered by opioid dependency clinics (those clinics managing patients in opioid agonist therapy programs). Order a Urine General Toxicology Panel (UGTP) for all other clinical indications including pain management.

Do not collect in same container with other tests.

Edmonton: 60 mL container size is preferred.
Alternate container types have not been validated and will not be accepted (including Becton Dickinson ® aliquot tubes, white lidded or pink lidded containers, orange lidded opaque containers).

Drug Facilitated Crimes (including drug facilitated sexual assault) and other potential medico-legal situations:

From a toxicological perspective it is not the mandate of clinical laboratories (such as APL) to investigate drug facilitated crimes, nor is it the mandate of clinical laboratories to triage samples to determine if police investigation is warranted. Clinical laboratories generally do not have the scope, sensitivity nor the forensic processes required for such analyses.
Specimens associated with drug facilitated crimes should not be received at or forwarded to APL laboratories.
For APL staff, refer to individual zone documents to determine appropriate handling if such samples are inadvertently received.

Other Non-Clinical Requests: physicians, do not order this test for the following situations:

Child welfare or custody
Company medicals
Court ordered
Employment related
Insurance related
Parental request
Parole requirement
Patient driven or patient pay requests
Social Services
Volunteer organization requests (eg. Cadets, Scouts)
