Clinical Indications:

Flow based immunophenotypic testing represents an accurate and invaluable tool for the clinician and the pathologist in the diagnosis, subclassification, prognostication and follow up (MRD) of acute and chronic leukemias as well as non-Hodgkin lymphomas.

Clinical Indications may include:

Acute Leukemia
Lymphoma
Lymphoproliferative Disorder
Minimal Residual Disease
MRD - AML
MRD - B-ALL
MRD - T-ALL
Pancytopenia (bone marrow only)
Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) (bone marrow only)

Ordering Alert:

CBC with Differential must be ordered for the same specimen collection time.

Shipping and Handling Alert:

Specimens must be delivered within 24 hours of collection

For testing sent to Edmonton: specimens must be delivered by 12:00 noon on the day before a weekend or statutory holiday.

Specimen Collection Requirements:

Hemolyzed, frozen, or clotted specimens are not accepted.

For testing sent to Calgary:
Adult: Collect in 8.5 mL PALE YELLOW (ACD-A) tube (full tube is required). Pediatric: Minimum 1.8 mL LT BLUE CITRATE tube

For testing sent to Edmonton:
Collect minimum 1 mL in GREEN NA HEP and LAVENDER EDTA tubes.

Processing:

DO NOT centrifuge.

For testing sent to Calgary from outside Calgary Zone and testing sent to Edmonton: Send 1 stained or unstained blood smear along with collection tube.

Transportation:

Transport at room temperature

Additional Test Information:

Requisition and CBC with Differential results must accompany the specimen if unavailable in Netcare.

Patient history or indication for testing is required.

For testing sent to Calgary from within the Calgary Zone: tests ordered by non-Hematologists will be screened using current CBC, Differential and smear results. Testing will only be done when one or more of the following criteria are met AND testing has not been done within the last 3 months.

Lymphocytosis greater than 3.0 x 10⁹/L
Monocytosis greater than 1.0 x 10⁹/L
Thrombocytopenia less than 100 x 10⁹/L
Blasts present
Flow Cytometry testing recommended from a previous peripheral blood smear report
