Calgary Zone: Microcollection Minimum Whole Blood Volumes

Processing:

Centrifuge and aliquot serum or plasma immediately.

Transportation:

Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane, and Chestermere collection sites: transport at room temperature.
Other collection sites: transport frozen.
Diagnostic Scientific Centre: Store frozen after receipt.

Reference Interval:

Thiocyanate levels up to 0.5 mmol/L are seen with nitroprusside therapy. Thiocyanate levels greater than 1.4 mmol/L are reportedly toxic.

Additional Test Information:

This test is indicated for measuring thiocyanate toxicity in patients on long-term nitroprusside therapy and with hepatic or renal dysfunction. It is not intended for monitoring occupational health surveillance due to cyanide exposure.

Urgent test requests will be reviewed for approval by Laboratory Medical or Clinical Scientific staff.
