This test is used to evaluate patients who present with signs or symptoms of porphyria.

Specimen Collection Requirements:

Protect from light. Label both the container and the foil with specimen label.

Processing:

Aliquot the specimen into two containers, minimum 50 g in each.
Freeze if specimen will not be tested within 48 hours.

Transportation:

Calgary Zone:

Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane, and Chestermere collection sites: transport at refrigerated temperature
Other collection sites: transport frozen
Diagnostic Scientific Centre: Store frozen after receipt

Other Zones: Transport frozen.

Testing Schedule:

Test performed within 2 weeks of receipt of specimen.

Reference Interval:

Negative less than 30 nmol/g wet weight
