| Specimen Collection Requirements: | Patient Instructions - Stool Parasite Screen and Ova and Parasite Stool Collection PX26-01.720 Adequate mixing of the stool specimen in SAF is critical for optimal preservation. For two weeks prior to collection, avoid laxative, bismuth, barium sulphate, antacids, antibiotics, anti-diarrheal drugs, or enemas. Stool must not be contaminated with urine, water, or other contaminants (mineral oil, vagisil, nystatin cream, spermicidal lubricant). Parasite shedding in stool is variable. Three stools, taken at 2-3 day intervals, may be required for optimal recovery. | ||
| Test Resources: | Use Community Microbiology Requisition - 20571 and Parasite History Form OR In Epic, order Stool Parasite Screen, indicate suspected parasite, and provide mandatory clinical history. | ||
| Stability and Storage: | Transport the specimen and requisition to the testing laboratory as soon as possible after collection. Unpreserved stool, less than 2 hours old, may be transferred to SAF. If delivery to the laboratory is delayed, refrigerate specimen for a maximum of 24 hours. | ||
