Inpatient testing will be booked with the on-site laboratory by the nursing unit.

Calgary Zone only:

Patients weighing less than 23 kg (50 lbs.): Patient will be referred to the Glenbrook Patient Service Centre with advanced notice given to the site. The tests are performed Monday to Friday.
Pediatric patients under 5 years of age: Due to possible difficulty administering the drink, ordering physician must obtain approval by Calgary Zone Medical and Scientific Staff. Contact Laboratory Information Centre at 403-770-3600 for Pathologist-on-call information.

Collection Alert:

Venous blood is required. Capillary blood specimens are not acceptable and will be cancelled.
Minimum 8 hour fasting required (not more than 16 hours)
Test cannot be collected by Mobile Collection Services.

Method and Interpretation of Results:

Increase in glucose values from baseline	Indication
Less than 1.1 mmol/L (Abnormal)	Rise in glucose of 1.0 mmol/L or less from baseline suggests lactase deficiency or malabsorption. Please interpret the results within clinical context.
Greater than or equal to 1.1 mmol/L (Normal)	Rise in glucose of 1.1 mmol/L or greater from baseline does not support lactase deficiency or malabsorption. Please interpret the results within clinical context.

Additional Test Information:

The lactose drink is provided by the laboratory. A prescription is not required.
Alternative drinks provided by the patient will not be accepted because they have not been validated by the laboratory.

Patient must remain at the laboratory for the duration of the test. If patient vomits, the test will be cancelled, and physician notified.
