Clinical Indications: | All babies born in Alberta are screened for the following conditions. Screening is available for infants born out of Alberta that have not been screened at their place of birth.

Collection Alert: | Ensure the initial sample is collected between 24 and 72 hours of age and as close to 24 hours as possible. | ||

Specimen Collection Requirements: | Routinely collected on all newborns at a minimum of 24 hours after birth, up to a maximum of 72 hours (3 days of age). However, if a screen has not been collected in this time frame it is still important that a sample is collected. All information on the NBS card must be completed to ensure a valid screen result. Ensure that expiry date of NBS card has not been exceeded before proceeding with collection. Collect five saturated blood spots on the NBS card. | ||
Stability and Storage: | Room temperature. Protect from moisture and direct sunlight. | ||
Processing: | Dry NBS card for a minimum of 3 hours with protective card flap folded back. | ||
Transportation: | Transport at room temperature. | ||
Method and Interpretation of Results: | Testing performed using multiple platforms. Interpretation of results performed in laboratories. Quantitative values provided only when results are positive for a screened condition. | ||
