Clinical Indications:

Most patients with diabetes require HbA1c monitoring with one test per 3 months. Certain conditions may require increased frequency, and below has been set up to support this.

Method and Interpretation of Results:

HbA1c (%)	2018 Diabetes Canada Guideline Interpretation
5.5 to 5.9	Indicates patient is at risk for diabetes mellitus
6.0 to 6.4	Meets criteria for diagnosis of prediabetes
> 6.5	Meets part of the criteria for diagnosis of diabetes mellitus

Recommended HbA1c treatment target: 7.0% or lower for most males and non-pregnant females. Treatment target should be tailored to each individual, taking into account risk factors for hypoglycemia (2018 Diabetes Canada Guidelines)

HbA1c results are affected by RBC lifespan (e.g. higher in iron deficiency, lower in chronic blood loss) and hemoglobin disorders. Glucose, fasting or Fructosamine may be more appropriate in these cases.
