Clinical Indications:

This order is used for patients that are symptomatic and likely to be or are already admitted to hospital where a rapid result will impact clinical decisions. If Respiratory Pathogen Panel (RPP) is being ordered, consider only ordering RPP as it includes RSV and Influenza A/B. RPP is usually reported in 24 hours from receipt in the laboratory.

Ordering Alert:

Do not send patients to outpatient collection sites or patient service centres if suspected or confirmed to have RSV or Influenza or another respiratory virus.

Specimen Collection Requirements:

Nasopharyngeal (NP) swab in Viral Transport Medium (VTM) or Universal Transport Medium (UTM)
Nasopharyngeal aspirate in sterile container
Endotracheal aspirate in sterile container
Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) or bronchoalveolar wash in sterile container

In Epic, order using Respiratory Infection (incl. COV-19) NAT.

For Epic downtime, use this requisition and indicate RSV and Influenza NAT testing is needed and reason:
