Collection Alert:	For testing sent to Edmonton: If Aldosterone/Renin Ratio is ordered, collect between 07:00-10:00. Random collections are acceptable otherwise. For testing sent to Calgary: Collect before 10:00.

Specimen Collection Requirements:	If both Aldosterone and Renin are ordered together, they must be collected at the same time and ordered as Aldosterone/Renin Ratio Calgary Zone: Test cannot be collected by Mobile Collection Service (MCS). APL staff: three labels will print; use the EDTA label for the primary tube. If an aldosterone/renin ratio is ordered, the EDTA label will state ALDOS/RENIN, RENIN. The aliquot labels will state ALDOS/RENIN and RENIN.

Processing:	Centrifuge at room temperature. Aliquot and freeze immediately. Do not refrigerate. Specimen is unstable at refrigerated temperature. See processing details below: For testing sent to Calgary For testing sent to Edmonton Centrifuge within 30 minutes of collection. Aliquot to two room temperature aliquot tubes and freeze immediately. Do not transport the primary tube. Diagnostic and Scientific Centre Accession:   - Place specimens in freezer upon receipt; ensure frozen specimens do not thaw.   - If the EDTA primary tube is received, do not process. Give to an MLAII for investigation. Aliquot and freeze plasma immediately.
Transportation:	Frozen
Method:	This assay measures renin concentration, not renin activity. Due to fluctuations in renin levels throughout the day, Renin should be collected in the morning and is the preferred specimen. Many factors may lead to false positive or false negative results. These include: posture, sodium intake, potassium status, diuretics, hypertensive medication and beta-blockers.
Testing Schedule:	Calgary: Twice a week. Edmonton: Batched - performed within 2 weeks of receipt

Additional Test Information:	This test is performed by Calgary Immunochemistry and Edmonton Special Chemistry. Patient should have normal salt intake (2 grams per day) at time of testing. Calgary Zone: Prompt: Position Is the patient upright or lying down? For community and outpatients, enter "Upright". Prompt: Minutes in Position How many minutes has the patient been in this position? For community and outpatients, calculate how many minutes the patient has been awake. If patient is unavailable to confirm and if not indicated on requisition, enter "0". Comments If physician has provided salt intake information or Lasix information, add as an Order Note.
