Test Resources: | Testing for Pneumocystis jirovecii is by real time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Bronchoalveolar Lavage Fluid is the preferred specimen type. For BAL specimens, molecular methods are 97-99% sensitive and 90-94% specific [1]. Bronchial Wash, induced sputum and ET aspirates are also accepted however the assay has not been validated for these specimen types and test performance has not been established [2]. For Edmonton Zone, Central Zone and North Zone, consult APL Public Health Microbiologist on Call prior to collection/submission of these non-validated specimen types (bronchial wash, induced sputum and ET aspirate). Note: Non-induced/expectorated sputum specimens are NOT acceptable | ||||||||
