| Specimen Collection Requirements: | Refer to Dynacare Test Directory: Serotonin, serum Collections performed at acute care (RRL) sites and all PSCs. Test cannot be collected by Mobile Collection Service (MCS). One 4.0 mL red top tube 1 mL serum Keep tubes cold (immerse in ice water or crushed ice) prior to and immediately after collection. CLS staff: Proceed with specimen collection and transport to DSC Accession. DSC Referrals will oversee the physician approval process. Note to ordering physician: This test requires review and approval by CLS Medical & Scientific Staff. Please contact CLS Referrals 403-770-3285 for further information on the approval process. | ||
| Processing: | PSC, RRL and Extra-regional: Centrifuge at 4ºC ± 2ºC within 1 hour of collection, aliquot and freeze immediately. Transport to DSC frozen and on ice. Send specimen in a separate bag with a photocopy of the requisition. DSC: Freeze specimens upon receipt in lab; ensure frozen specimens do not thaw. | ||

| Additional Test Information: | Serotonin may be increased by diet or released by medications. For 48 hours prior to collection, patient must abstain from avocados, bananas, coffee, plums, pineapples, tomatoes, walnuts, hickory nut, mollusks, eggplant and medications such as aspirin, cortocotropins, MAO inhibitors, phenacetin, catecholamines, reserpine and nicotine. A diet low in tryptophan is required. | ||
