Ordering Alert:

Do not send patients to outpatient collection sites or patient service centres if suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19.

Specimen Type:

Refer to Acceptable swab types for COVID testing for the appropriate collection device based on patient testing location.

Other acceptable specimen types for COVID-19 testing include nasopharyngeal aspirate, endotracheal aspirate and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL).

On-site COVID testing is available at certain regional hospital laboratories. Refer to APL Laboratory Bulletins for updated information on availability and indications for on-site testing.

Transportation:

Specimens must be shipped to the laboratory within 48 hours after collection.
Ship specimens from suspected COVID-19 patients to the laboratory using routine procedures.
Ship specimens from confirmed COVID-19 patients to the laboratory as Transportation of Dangerous Goods Category B.
