Program:Genetics and Genomics
Test Name:Chromosomal Microarray (CMA), fetal tissues (G&G North UAH)
Alternate Test Name:Fetal Tissue Array
Comparative Genomic Hybridization, tissue (fetal)
Array CGH, tissue
Performing Site: University of Alberta Hospital
Performing Dept:Cytogenetics
Availability:Test set-up routinely Monday to Friday (08:00-16:00)
TAT:6 weeks
Preferred Tube/Container:Sterile 15 mL or 50 mL polypropylene centrifuge tube
Alternate:Plain sterile tube/container with a screw cap
Specimen Requirements:Collect a preferred tissue specimen (umbilical cord, skin, spleen, lung, thymus, kidney or muscle).
Min. Sample Required:1 cm3
Specimen Processing:Place tissue specimen in a sterile tube/container with NO fixative.
Refrigerate fresh tissue specimen.

If unable to ship for receipt in lab in less than 48 hours from time of collection, freeze tissue sample with NO fixative.
Specimen Handling:1. Ship fresh tissue sample at 4 - 8oC to Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory via UAH Specimen Control
    WMC 4B2.10.
2. All fresh specimens should be received in the laboratory within 48 hours of time of collection.
3. If tissue sample was frozen, ship frozen specimen on dry ice. Specimen must not thaw in transport.
4. If specimens are sent from outside of Edmonton, please call the laboratory at (780) 407-1434 or
fax shipping information to (780) 407-1761 to inform the lab of expected arrival time and mode of transport.
Additional Information:Other samples are acceptable but quality of DNA obtained may not be optimal for this assay i.e., products of conception or placental tissue.

For Products of Conception (POC’s) or Placental Tissues:
A maternal blood sample (5ml EDTA) and a completed Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory Requisition (Edmonton) must also be submitted.

Molecular Diagnostic Labortory performs pre-analytical processes for CMA test requests. Cytogenetics Laboratory will perform analytical testing and report results.
Requisition/Form:All requests MUST be submitted on a Chromosomal Microarray (CMA) requisition form.
Ensure all sections of the requisition are complete.
Order Restrictions:CMA of fetal tissue ordering is restricted to Pediatricians, Pediatric Specialists or Geneticists.
Reference Interval:Interpretation provided on report.
Comments:For additional information refer to Genetic Laboratory Services webpage or contact
