Program:Genetics and Genomics

Test Name:Amino Acid Quantitation, CSF (G&G North UAH)
Test Code:SFAAQ
Performing Site: University of Alberta Hospital
Performing Dept:Newborn Metabolic Screen & Biochemical Genetics

Availability:Test performed Monday to Friday
TAT:7 days

Preferred Tube/Container:Sterile plastic screw-cap vial for Cerebrospinal Fluid

Min. Sample Required:1.0 mL

Specimen Processing:Freeze immediately.
Minimum test volume 500 µL.

Additional Information:This test should be ordered in conjunction with plasma amino acid quantitation. The specimens for both tests should be collected at the same time.
Must notify the Newborn Metabolic Screening and Biochemical Genetics Lab for high priority turn-around time.

Requisition/Form:Submit request using Chemistry Specialty Requisition
Please ensure all required information is provided on the requisition.

Indications:Evaluating patients with possible inborn errors of amino acid metabolism, especially nonketotic hyperglycinemia and serine biosynthesis defects. CSF/plasma glycine ratio required for diagnosis of glycine encephalopathy (nonketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH)).
Reference Interval:Reference intervals will be provided on the report.

Critical Value:
CSF/plasma glycine ratio    > 0.08
For accurate interpretation of the ratio, a plasma sample collected within 24 hrs of the CSF collection is required.
