Preferred Tube/Container:Plastic 4.5 mL Lithium Heparin PST Gel (LIGHT GREEN)
 
Specimen Requirements:Patient Preperation:
Requires a minimum 4h fast;or just before the next feed for newborns. Physician test requests on non-fasted samples from known metabolic patients are also acceptable.
 
Min. Sample Required:3 mL whole blood
Pediatric 1mL whole blood
 
Specimen Processing:Separate plasma. A minimum of 700uL of plasma must be submitted for testing
Freeze plasma immediately.
 
Specimen Handling:Transport frozen samples on ice. Samples must not thaw during transport.
 
Additional Information:Specimen Rejection Criteria:
Serum will not be accepted.
Grossly hemolyzed specimens
Plasma not received frozen

 
Requisition/Form:Submit request using Chemistry Specialty Requisition
Please ensure all required information, including patient's clinical history/indication is complete on the requisition.
 
Indications:Evaluating patients with possible inborn errors of metabolism. May help in evaluation of endocrine disorders, liver diseases, muscle diseases, neoplastic diseases, neurological diseases, nutritional disturbances, renal failure, and burns.
Reference Interval:Reference Intervals are age-dependent and will be provided on the report.
 
Comments:Metabolites reported: taurine, aspartic acid, threonine, serine, asparagine, glutamic acid, glutamine, glycine, alanine, citrulline, alpha-amniobutyric acid, valine, cystine, methionine, isoleucine, leucine, tyrosine, phenylanine, tryptophan, ornithine, lysine, histidine, arginine.
