Specimen Requirements:Collect Monday to Friday before 1400 hours (excluding holidays) only.
Notify Newborn Metabolic Screening / Biochemical Genetics Laboratory (780) 407-8820 when patient presents at collection site, and before collection.
 
Min. Sample Required:1 mL
 
Specimen Processing: Keep sample on ice.
Samples must be received in the Newborn Metabolic Screening / Biochemical Genetics Lab on ice within 2 hours of collection.
 
Specimen Handling:Send ON ICE Immediately to the Newborn Metabolic Screening / Biochemical Genetics Lab.
Cab if necessary to ensure the sample is received in the Newborn Screening and Biochemical Genetics Lab within 2 hours of collection.
 
Additional Information:Test ideally performed within 1 hour of collection.
If baby is on TPN, this will cause a false positive result.

Rejection Criteria: Samples not received in lab, on ice within 2 hours of collection.
 
Requisition/Form:Submit request using Chemistry Specialty Requisition
Please ensure all required information is provided on the requisition.
 
Indications:Sulfite is detected in urine in two rare metabolic disorders, sulfite oxidase deficiency and molybdenum cofactor defieciency.
