Philanthropic and Honorific Naming Recognition Policy

On December 8, 2016, the AHS Board approved revisions to the Philanthropic and Honorific Naming and Recognition Policy. The revisions establish a consistent approach for governing honorific and philanthropic naming and recognition and philanthropic contributions and achievements within AHS.

A naming policy working group with 12 foundation representatives was formed in 2015 and worked with Foundation Relations and Policy Development to draft policy revisions. Engagement included distribution of the draft policy to all foundations in Alberta and approximately 100 AHS staff including ZELs, area directors and operational leads to foundations for feedback.

Amendments to the Policy

  • Allowing decisions on naming and recognition to be considered in a manner that is fair, equitable, and scalable to all Foundations; regardless of their fundraising capacity, resources, or their urban or rural locations.
  • Creating flexible criteria when considering the area, program or site to be named, scope of the naming (provincial, urban, regional or rural), and fundraising capacity of the foundation.
  • Accelerating approvals by enhanced local decision making, allowing foundations to better serve the needs of their donors.
  • Shaping best practices for philanthropic and honorific naming by a body of knowledge compiled through benchmarking. Data compiled by Foundation Relations will be available to foundations to aid in developing their naming plans and to AHS approvers for reference.
