In reference to a recent news story regarding salary compensation, Dr. Verna Yiu, President and CEO of Alberta Health Services, provides her response.
Alberta Health Services (AHS) employees in southern Alberta and across the province are dedicated individuals who work hard every day to provide communities with critical, compassionate and quality health care.
All our employees, whether they are from Medicine Hat, Oyen or elsewhere in Alberta, deliver caring services to Albertans each and every day. From our front-line workers like paramedics, nurses, technicians, and psychologists to those working behind the scenes, like our unit managers, clinical leads, lab scientists and senior leaders; all the work being undertaken by these employees has important impacts on the delivery of care and is truly valued.
AHS employees take pride in making sure you and your loved ones get the care and compassion that is both needed and deserved, no matter what job they have within the organization. I am proud to lead an organization where the needs of our patients, families, residents and clients are front and centre every day.
We compensate our employees in a fair, competitive and fiscally-responsible manner so we can continue to attract well-qualified clinical and administrative health care staff across all parts of the organization. This is vital given the demands on the health system today.
In southern Alberta, AHS provides access to quality health care services to more than 300,000 residents in 14 facilities. Every year, AHS staff in southern Alberta deliver almost 90,000 influenza immunizations, respond to 40,000 EMS calls, support more than 200,000 emergency department visits, assist in 4,100 births, and provide more than 220,000 total hospital days of care.
