Care close to home

My name is Jason VandenHoek, and I am the Executive Director of the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation, in Lethbridge. I’ve been with the Foundation for 10 years – first as a Development Officer and for the last seven years as Executive Director. As Executive Director, I manage the day-to-day operations of the Foundation, including the implementation and management of our development strategy.

The mission of the Foundation is to seek financial support from donors that will ensure the best possible patient services and health programs in our community. Over the course of the last 10 years, donors in Southern Alberta have contributed over $20 million to enhance the care provided at Chinook Regional Hospital.

What Matters to You? Day is important because as individuals we are the best and most effective advocates for our own medical care, and the medical care of our loved ones.

As a Foundation, we often get to speak with donors whom are grateful patients – the care they received often met and exceeded their expectations and they are motivated to give back to the facility that helped them in a time of need. A constant theme we hear is how by asking questions and voicing their concerns to medical staff, their quality of care was impacted in a positive way. We encourage all of the folks whom we interact with to be vocal when it comes to their health – they will be heard!

For me, what matters most when it comes to healthcare is comfort. As much as possible, when receiving treatment I want to be close to home – in the facility and with the medical staff that I am most familiar with. In this environment I’m most comfortable with telling my healthcare providers what matters to me.

When we speak with our donors, we hear this all the time – how comfortable they are receiving care close to home and how at ease it makes them feel. We’re happy that through donor support, we’ve been able to keep folks right here in Lethbridge for their care, – and we know this the goal province wide.
