Compression Garment Authorization

Compression Garment Authorization provides lower leg assessment and authorization based on eligibility criteria set by the Government's Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL) program for compression stockings and hernia support. Lower extremity assessment is for clients diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, does not have a current wound, and who are not diabetic or on any diabetic medication.

Following AADL eligibility criteria, AHS' Compression Garment Authorization team provides clinical assessment and funding authorization requests for compression stockings and hernia supports only.

As of October 1st, 2024, please refer to Calgary’s Integrated Home Care (IHC) team, via Community Care Access (CCA), for AADL authorization for the following basic medical equipment and supplies:

  • mobility and transfer aids (e.g. walkers, wheelchairs, bedrails, poles)
  • bathroom equipment (e.g. raised toilet seats, commodes, shower seats, wall bars)
  • incontinence supplies (e.g. briefs, pull-ups, liners, catheters)

Please continue to refer to Pediatric Community Rehabilitation for assessment / authorization of pediatric incontinence supplies.

Eligibility

Only patients residing in the Calgary Zone are eligible to access our services.

You are eligible for a Compression Garment Authorization assessment if:

  • you meet the eligibility criteria for benefits funded through the Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL) program
  • your lower extremity assessment is for chronic venous insufficiency and you do not have a diabetes diagnosis or a current wound
  • your hernia support is for a condition described to be chronic, non-operable and support is required on a permanent and daily basis
  • you live within the Calgary city limits
Service Access

Healthcare providers should consult the Alberta Referral Directory for service referral information.

A medical prescription is required for (1) compression stockings and (2) hernia supports to confirm underlying diagnosis and specific compression parameters.

Wait Times

An estimated wait time will be provided at the time of initial contact / referral acceptance. Messages left on our voicemail will be returned within 3 - 5 business days. Current waitlist information will be provided and preliminary intake information gathered at that time.

Clients are typically seen on a first-come, first-served basis.

Fees

There is no fee for AHS' CCAIL compression garment assessment for AADL funding authorisation.

Clients may be required to co-pay with Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL). Visit the AADL website for funding eligibility information.
