Assesses, tests, and educates people who want to be living kidney donors.Offers services for people who want to be living kidney donors (donate one of their kidneys to a person with end-stage kidney disease), including:
- assessing and testing to see if a person is able to donate
- educating people about the process of donating a kidney
- surgery to remove the donated kidney and follow-up
Living donors are usually blood relatives (e.g., brother, sister, parent, child, grandparent, grandchild, niece, nephew). Sometimes a person who isn’t a blood relative can be a donor (e.g., husband, partner, wife, in-laws, close friend). Anonymous donors (people who want to donate a kidney to someone they don’t know) may also be part of this program.
Donors who aren’t a match for the person who was going to receive their kidney can be part of a paired exchange program with Canadian Blood Services.
