Emergency Medical Services - Inter-facility Transport

Low acuity patient transfer services moving between facilities for medical needs within the 50km radius of Edmonton and Calgary.

Basis Life Support (BLS) and Non-Emergency Transport (NET) level of care provided by Primary Care Paramedics (PCP) and Emergency Medical Responders (EMR). This service is provided by dedicated contract service partners. Patient movements will begin and end within 50km of major hospitals for appointments, direct admit inpatients, discard patients. High acuity (ALS level of care), clinically urgent, and emergent transports will be completed by AHS. Airport transports and transports outside of the 50 km radius are also not included.

Eligibility

Eligible only to people who are:

  • an inpatient under the care of a physician
  • seeking low acuity patient transfer services moving between facilities for medical needs within the 50km radius of Edmonton and Calgary
Service Access

This service is booked through an online portal which is accessible by AHS and contracted AHS (Long Term Care) staff who are arranging transportation for patients. The general public cannot access this service on their own. It is completed through their health care provider and they must be an inpatient with a sending and receiving doctor. Services offer to low acuity patient transfer services moving between facilities for medical needs within the 50km radius of Edmonton and Calgary.


Fees

If EMS is requested to transport to or from appointments that are not at approved facilities, a bill is sent to the patient by AHS. No fees are charged for inpatients who are moved between approved facilities.

AHS bills patients for services not covered by Alberta Health Care.
