A tertiary care subspecialty multidisciplinary service that provides rapid, evidence-based assessment and treatment for individuals aged 15-35 experiencing early or first episode psychosis, along with support and education for their families. The Early Psychosis Intervention Program (EPIP) provides an initial comprehensive psychiatric assessment for people who may be experiencing the early signs of a primary psychotic disorder or a first episode of psychosis and may offer ongoing care for up to three years when clinically appropriate. The program focuses on early treatment, recovery, and helping individuals and families understand psychosis and how to manage it.
Services include:
- Medical care and medication support from a psychiatrist to help reduce symptoms and promote stability
- Ongoing support from a dedicated case manager (nurse), who helps coordinate care, monitor progress, and connect clients with appropriate resources
- Support and education for families to help them understand psychosis and feel confident in offering support to their loved one
- Individual therapy using evidence based treatments, such as cognitive behavioural and skills focused approaches, to help clients understand / manage symptoms related to psychosis, reduce stress, and strengthen day to day functioning
- Group therapy and supports designed for psychosis, including skills based and supportive groups for clients and families
The program aims to reduce the impact of untreated psychosis, support recovery, and help individuals return to work, school, relationships, and daily life as effectively as possible. As clients stabilize and obtain supports, the program helps them transition to community based care-such as follow up with their family doctor and other community supports-to assist continuity and long term recovery. If clients continue to struggle or require more specialized support, the program will assist in connecting them with additional mental health services that best match their needs.
