Mood Disorders Program - Addiction & Mental Health

The Mood Disorders Program is a subspecialty psychiatry service based at the Foothills Medical Centre.

Adults (18+ of age) with a moderate to severe presentation of one of the following:

  • recurrent major depressive disorder
  • bipolar disorder (I or II)
  • first episode depression with a family history of bipolar disorder OR
  • young adult (15 to 25 years of age) with first admission to hospital for any mood disorder
  • timely and comprehensive psychiatric assessment
  • treatment for primary recurrent unipolar and bipolar mood disorder when indicated
  • education
  • research

Eligibility

Early Intervention stream (15 to 25 years of age):
Clients must meet ALL of the following:

  • able to participate in outpatient service, AND
  • client was recently hospitalized for a mood disorder, OR
  • family history of a severe mood disorder (e.g. family member required hospitalization, resulted in major home-work disruption, or required treatment with mood stabilizers),

Continuing care:

  • clients of child and youth services (MAPS, Emerging Adults Program) with major mood disorders who are transitioning to adult services
Referral Needed

Adult (18+ years of age)
Clients must meet ALL of the following:

  • able to participate in outpatient service; AND

Clients must meet ONE or more of the following:

  • unsuccessful treatment at an CAMHC OR
  • first episode depression with a family history of bipolar disorder OR
  • failure to achieve remission or high risk of recurrence for any treated mood disorder; OR
  • early in the course of illness without adequate progress towards sustained remission; OR
  • treatment refractory depression (2 failed antidepressant trials of adequate dosage and duration in a mood episode or recurrent episodes despite maintenance treatment); OR
  • require access to specialized therapies such as lithium or rTMS
