Provides inpatient and outpatient assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for children who have non-malignant blood conditions.Cares for pediatric hematology patients who have conditions and disorders such as: Conditions affecting blood cell numbers e.g. anemia, low platelets Abnormalities of red cell structure and function e.g. sickle cell disease, hereditary spherocytosis Disorders of platelet or white cell function Bone marrow failure syndromes both acquired and congenital Bleeding disorders e.g. hemophilia There are three subspecialty programs that care for children with ongoing hematological disorders: Dr. John Akabutu Comprehensive Centre for Bleeding Disorders Pediatric Comprehensive Sickle Cell Program of Northern Alberta Comprehensive Chelation Clinic The program has access to all the necessary laboratory and pharmacy facilities for evaluating and treating pediatric patients.
