Rehabilitation Oncology

 Location: Holy Cross Centre

Provides outpatient rehabilitation oncology services and lymphedema management for cancer patients.
Rehabilitation works to help patients restore or adapt to physical changes, increase independence and safety in mobility and daily activities, provide relief and management of symptoms and, assist with speech or swallowing disorders.

Services offered vary by location and may include:

  • assessment and treatment for functional impairments, limitations and activities of daily living caused by cancer and / or cancer treatments.
  • at the Cross Cancer Institute (CCI), Central Alberta Cancer Centre (CACC) and Holy Cross Centre: Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy
  • at CACC and CCI sites: Speech Language Pathology
  • at Tom Baker Cancer Centre: Speech Language Pathology for Head and Neck Cancers
  • cancer-related lymphedema management for swelling that has developed in any part of the body related to the cancer or cancer treatments, including compression bandaging, manual lymph drainage as indicated, exercise, and education re skincare, self massage and home management.
  • assessment and prescription for compression garments and / or compression systems
  • Alberta aids to daily living (AADL) authorizations for compression sleeves, stockings, and / or other aids to daily living equipment
  • lymphedema education and cancer-related fatigue class taught monthly

Up to 10 treatment sessions are covered and extended at the discretion of the treating therapist.

Service Providers May Include
occupational therapists (OTs), physical therapists (PTs), speech language pathologists (SLPs)

Clients with rehabilitation conditions, including lymphedema, caused by cancer and / or cancer treatments.

Examples of, but not limited to, and other rehabilitation conditions such as:

  • Axillary webbing (cording)
  • Radiation capsulitis
  • Trismus from head and neck cancer
  • Radiation fibrosis limiting range of motion 
  • Pain
  • Fatigue
  • Decreased mobility and deconditioning 
  • Spinal accessory nerve damage

Neuro-oncological changes such as chemotherapy induced polyneuropathy, brain fog and cognitive changes.
