Eligibility

Anemia management services are limited in scope:

Preoperative patients

  • certain criteria apply e.g.: 'Surgical admit' procedures associated with elevated risk of blood loss
  • known surgical date or pending within six (6) months

Prenatal patients

  • trial of oral iron (at least 2 different types, appropriate duration, consistent intake) has failed or is intolerable
  • hemoglobin less than 110 g/L. 

Patients with anemia of chronic disease (i.e.: not related to iron deficiency) should instead be referred to General Hematology or appropriate specialty service.
This may include patients with:

  • chronic conditions (e.g.: chronic kidney disease, oncology, inflammatory disease)
  • blood disorders (e.g.: Sickle cell, thalassemia, etc.)

 

Referral Needed

Professional referral may be initiated by medical professionals with prescribing privileges: physicians, nurse practitioners

Service Access

Healthcare providers should consult the Alberta Referral Directory for service referral information.

All patients having elective surgery are eligible for assessment. Some services require professional referral. We do not accept referrals for patients who are not facing surgical procedures.

Wait Times

Wait times for patients to receive assessment and treatment may vary, depending on case load, other.

Fees

Most services provided are covered by the Alberta Health provincial insurance plan. Some treatments may not be covered (e.g.: iron supplements, other medications).
