The Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit is dedicated to the provision of critical care to neonates, infants, and children with an underlying cardiac condition that may require congenital cardiac surgery and/or medical, surgical, and mechanical support of cardiac failure.The LaBonte Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) at the Stollery Children's Hospital provides state of the art cardiac care to critically ill infants and children up to 18 years of age. It is the referal center for the Western Canadian Children's Heart network (WCCHN) and is the pediatric extracorporeal life support (ECLS), ventricular assist device (VAD), and thoracic transplant referral site for most of Western Canada, and includes specialty programs such as pediatric pulmonary hypertension. The PCICU has 15 funded beds and is located on the University of Alberta Hospital campus in the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute unit 6A7.
The PCICU supports multidisciplinary collaborative care that is patient and family focused. Research and quality functions are ongoing and integrated into the PCICU activity. A number of training programs, including medicine, nursing, and allied health disciplines, will use the PCICU for clinical practicums.
