This clinic specializes in swallowing and airway problems and evaluates and manages children with dysphagia and risk of aspiration. This clinic uses a team approach to assess and manage infants and children who may have an airway disorder that makes it difficult to swallow.
Services that this clinic may offer include:
- an assessment called the Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of the Swallow (FEES) to evaluate a child’s ability to eat and swallow safely and comfortably
- investigations into any associated breathing or other problems
- possible management options which may include medical treatment, modification of feeding (e.g. changing the thickness of liquids or type of nipple or bottle), the need for further investigations or the need for involvement of other specialists
If further involvement from other specialists is needed the child is invited to the Aerodigestive Clinic where a Pediatric Respirologist and Gastroenterologist provide their services.
