Pediatric Surgical Short Stay

Children needing minor surgery go to this unit before and after surgery and are expected to go home on the same day or within 23 hours of surgery.

Most children stay for 1 to 3 hours after surgery and are usually discharged on the same day as surgery. The child will arrive from the Post Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU) by stretcher or crib. A responsible adult must stay with the child during the entire hospital stay.

Easing Your Child's Fears

If your child is very anxious about surgery, contact the Stollery Child Life Program to speak with a Child Life Specialist. They can provide resources and information on the best way to prepare your child for surgery. For more information: Surgical Short Stay

Eligibility

Patient's with a scheduled surgical procedure.

Referral Needed

Scheduled surgeries are referred by surgeons through the Pediatric Surgery Booking Office.
Emergency surgeries are refererred through the hospital's Emergency Department.

Service Access

Bring the following with you:

  • child's provincial healthcare card and birth certificate or passport
  • a list of all medications the patient takes
  • documents required for legal consent
