Pediatric Videofluoroscopic Swallow Studies

Radiological assessment of children who have swallowing problems.

This service provides care to children with swallowing problems. This may include swallowing issues associated with structural and motor disorders affecting the mouth, throat, airway, and/or suspected aspiration.

Service Providers May Include
occupational therapists (OTs), radiologists, radiation technologists, speech-language pathologists (SLPs)

Pediatric patients only.

Child must be taking a minimum of 20cc at one time.

Children using seating systems wider than 16" wheel-to-wheel or without removable back canes will be redirected to Outpatient Dysphagia Clinic. If child is seated in a wheelchair for ALL meals, please contact to discuss case prior to making referral.

Service is provided to:

  • children at risk for aspiration (food or liquid enters the airway), choking and possible airway obstruction, chest infections, malnutrition, dehydration and impaired growth and development.
  • children with complex feeding / swallowing problems.
Service Access

Healthcare providers should consult the Alberta Referral Directory for service referral information.

A clinical feeding & swallowing assessment by a feeding therapist is required prior to referral.

A physician referral is required, and primary care must be retained by the physician. This is not a physician-led clinic.

Referrals must be submitted on the AHS X-Ray Request Form.

Wait Times

Referrals are responded to within 2 business days.

Assessments are given priority based on how urgent they are.

Once the referral is accepted, the family will be contacted to schedule an appointment.
