Obstetric Medicine

The Obstetric Medicine service at the RAH is a national leader in providing care for pregnant women with medical problems. We provide preconception counseling, care during pregnancy and immediate postpartum care.

The Obstetric Medicine service is a group of General Internists with expertise in dealing with medical problems in pregnancy.
We provide consultative care to:

  • pregnant women with medical problems
  • women contemplating pregnancy with medical problems

We do not provide obstetric or prenatal care. We do not provide ongoing management of pre-existing conditions or diagnostic workup of undifferentiated symptoms or conditions outside pregnancy.

Eligibility

Obstetric Medicine sees pregnant patients with complex medical conditions. We accept referrals from independent practitioners, who may need to initiate diagnostic testings and therapeutic managements before or after our consultation. We do not assume the role of primary care physicians. If you have any questions, please contact the on-call obstetric medicine physician via the Royal Alexandra Hospital switchboard (780-735-4111).

Patients must have preexisting medical conditions that are to be managed during preconception and pregnancy.

If referral is for Post Partum Preeclampsia clinic forward the Post Partum Preeclampsia Clinic Referral form and delivery record to 780-735-5611

**Eligibility requirement <34 weeks preeclampsia, eclampsia or HELLP Syndrome, +/- IUGR. Patient must be 3 months post partum or later to be seen**

Wait Times

Urgent <1 week. Semi-Urgent <2 weeks. Routine pregnant patient 3-5 weeks; Preconception 3-6 months.

Our bookings are based off the triaging done by our Obstetric Medicine team.
