Opioid Deprescribing Program

Voluntary outpatient program for patients living with chronic pain struggling to discontinue chronic opioid therapy.

Services available include:

  • pain management and appropriate diagnoses
  • referrals for interventional treatments
  • psychiatric and addiction consultations when appropriate
  • group therapy
  • initial support and monitoring (e.g. prescription management, medical follow up, urine testing, counselling and treatment planning)
  • phone consultations for practitioners
  • links to other pain treatment services

Tapers of opioids may require significant time and resources for some patients. Patients will be asked to attend an information session to learn about opioids, pain, and how to deprescribe.

Practitioners for this service are not available every week day, availability based on practitioner schedule.

Service Providers May Include
addiction counsellors, doctors, mental health therapists, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists, registered nurses (RNs)

Clients must be on opioids and be willing and wanting to taper off opioid medication.

Service Access

Referrals should be faxed into clinic with medication list attached. A referral letter is acceptable, however, you can call the clinic directly for the specific referral form.

Healthcare providers should consult the Alberta Referral Directory for service referral information.

Wait Times

Clients will be booked into the first available information session (usually 4-8 weeks after referral), then typically a 3-5 month wait  after session for intake appointment.

An estimated wait time will be provided at the time of appointment booking.
