Child Abuse Services Therapy Stream

A multidisciplinary, specialized service that provides therapeutic service to children who have experienced physical / sexual abuse and / or neglect.

In order to enhance the bio-psycho-social health and well-being of clients, the service offers:

Child Abuse Therapy Stream:

  • assesses the impact of abuse and neglect on the referred child
  • provides therapeutic intervention to children and their caregivers to address emotional
  • behavioural and relational challenges associated with the abuse and neglect
  • children between 6 to 11 years of age who are exhibiting problematic sexual behaviour for
    which clinical assessment or treatment is needed
  • The Child Abuse Service therapy team does not provide emergency services.

Eligibility

Inclusion Criteria:

  • experienced sexual abuse, and / severe and complex physical abuse and / severe and complex neglect
  • under 18 years of age at the time
  • children between 6 to 11 years of age who are exhibiting problematic sexual behaviour for which clinical assessment or treatment is needed

Exclusion Criteria:

  • assessment / treatment of a youth, 12 years of age or older, who has committed a sexual offence
  • assessment / evaluation of parental capacity to meet the needs of the referred child
  • continues to experience ongoing maltreatment (abuse, neglect, domestic violence, or caregiver substance abuse)
  • investigation, validation or review of allegations of abuse
  • to obtain disclosure of abuse from the referred child
  • investigation by Law Enforcement and / Children’s Services has determined that the child abuse allegations are unfounded/unsubstantiated

The program does not provide investigations of abuse. If you have a concern about a child who is being abused or is at risk for abuse, contact Child and Family Services (CFS) – Child Intervention Intake and Response Team (CIIRT)
