Health Link Virtual MD

 Location: Alberta Wide

This program connects Health Link 811 callers with a doctor by phone or video.

When Albertans call Health Link 811, a registered nurse will assess them to see if they need to speak with a doctor. If needed, they will be referred to a virtual doctor. Some eligibility rules apply and it may not be available to everyone.

The virtual doctor:

  • triages (This means the doctor will assess a patient to determine how urgent their treatment is and what kind of care they need.)
  • provides advice
  • prescribes prescriptions
  • orders blood work or urinalysis to help diagnose conditions such as urinary tract infections

This program aims to improve access to healthcare, especially for those in rural areas or with mobility issues, while helping to reduce unnecessary hospital visits.
