The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a specialized care environment dedicated to the treatment of critically ill infants and children, primarily those experiencing non-cardiac conditions such as respiratory failure, sepsis, traumatic injuries, and complex post-operative recovery. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) provides specialized care for critically ill infants and children from across Western Canada.
Our dedicated pediatric critical care transport team helps ensure children recieve the care they need as quickly and safely as possible, whether they are being transferred from a community hospital or another healthcare facility.
In addition, the Rapid Response Team is based within the PICU and provides timely assessment and support for hospitalized children whose condition may be worsening outside of critical care areas. By responding early, the team helps ensure children recieve the right level of care at the right time.
The Stollery PICU Critical Care Program also offers advanced life support therapies through its Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) program, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), therapeutic plasma exchange (TPA), and ventricular assist device (VAD) support.
